There are many molds that have a black color, and not all of them produce toxins all of the time. The toxic type of mold has the Stachybotrys strain that can produce poisons that are known as “mycotoxins.” The temperature and humidity must be right for mycotoxins to flourish. These mycotoxins are dependent on oxygen.

Most research on toxic molds has been on the effects of ingested molds from food. Little research is available on the effects of breathing mold micotoxins.
