Copyright (c) 2009 Metro Carpet Cleaning

Carpeting can fall victim to water damage for a wide variety of reasons and there are a few things you can do to save a carpet that has been exposed to water.

The type of treatment a carpet that has suffered water damage may need depends on the type of water it was exposed to, and the length of exposure. The most common types of water damage are usually noticed very quickly and the carpets can be saved if the water is clean and removed in a timely fashion.

The easiest type of water damage to fix is when a carpet is exposed to clean water. This happens many times when a pipe breaks in a home and water floods a room or a basement. Since this is clean water, the real danger to the carpet is from mold and mildew forming. Both of these can be serious health hazards and if they form in the carpeting, there is a very good chance it cannot be restored.

The other two types of water damage is caused by unsanitary water and black water. Unsanitary water usually comes from a toilet that has overflowed and may have contained bodily fluids. Black water is water that comes from a broken sewer pipe or sewer that has backed up into a basement. If a carpet has been damaged by black water, it is a total loss and should be discarded as soon as possible as well as any padding and tack strips from the room. This type of water damage may require professional attention and should be handled very carefully because of the risk of infection. Unsanitary water damage is a tricky case and saving the carpet really depends on how much water damage is involved and how long it remains on the carpet.

If the water damage was from clean water, the first step is to address the water leak if you haven’t done so already. It won’t help you to start working on the damage if there is still water leaking onto the carpet. Before you start working on the carpet, be sure you have a good pair of gloves you can use. The tack strips contain a series of very sharp nails and these can easily scratch you once exposed. Also, make sure you are wearing thick-soled shoes or boots so that if you step on these tack strips they won’t hurt your feet.

Once you are ready, you need to start the cleanup by removing the carpeting from its tack strips and folding it in half. The best way to do this is to grab the carpeting near a corner with a heavy-duty pair or pliers and pull straight up until you can get your hand around the edge of the carpet. Once you have this edge, work your way around the room to loosen the carpet from the rest of the tack strip. This will expose the padding and allow you to remove this from the floor. This padding acts like a sponge and will hold onto whatever water it touched. Because this will lead to mold, the padding needs to be discarded. Remove the padding from the part of the floor you exposed and discard it. While the floor is exposed, give it a good mopping with a solution of water and bleach. This will kill any mold or mildew that may have started to form, and prevent any from forming. Let this dry until you can visibly see the floor is completely dry. Now fold the carpet over the other direction exposing the other half of the padding. Remove this as well, discard it and mop this half of the floor with the bleach and water solution.

Now lay the carpeting back in place, flat on the floor. Use a wet-Vac to try and vacuum up as much of the water in the carpeting as possible. This may take several passes so be patient and try to get as much as possible. Once you have finished this process you’ll need to get the carpeting up off of the floor and ventilate underneath it. You can use anything handy to prop up the carpeting. Milk crates and cinderblocks work well and are usually easy to locate. The trick is to get the entire carpet elevated and off of the floor so that mold and mildew cannot set in. Once the carpet is elevated, use a few fans to blow fresh air beneath the carpet to help dry it out and dry the floor. This will take several hours to complete and you should keep checking the carpet throughout the process and move the fans as needed to make sure all of the carpet is dry. It is really important to allow the humidity in the room to escape and running the fans will help move the air and reduce the humidity.

Once the carpet is completely dry you can either replace the padding yourself of have a local carpet store come out and replace the padding for you and reinstall the rug. If you’ve done a good job of drying the rug, it should be fine and you can use it normally. It might be a good idea to get it professionally cleaned after it has had a chance to settle back into place for a few weeks just to remove any deep-set dirt from the water damage.

Watch the video related to mildew

Wet and forget works on almost any garden surface and everytime it rains this reactives the product and starts lifting more mould and moss.

I was very skeptical about this product. I bought 1 gallon of wet and forget and thought I would try it out to see if it worked. Where I live there is mould and mildew and moss all over my garden and I have tried everything to get rid of it. Even if I scrap it up with a hand tool that takes time and it always comes back.

I decided to give Wet and Forget Mould Removal a try as it says that everytime it rains the product works again. I used a pump up garden sprayer with it to apply the product and then I left it. A week or so later I went to check on how it was doing. It had cleared a little bit of the mould but I was not that impressed.

It did say on the packet to let it run for up to 4 weeks as if it rains this helps as well to remove more of the mould and mildew. I thought I would give it a hand and I hosed it down and left it again.

When I went to check again 2 weeks later there was a noticeable difference. I was amazed at how much of it Wet and Forget had removed. Again 2 weeks ago we had a downpour here and wet and forget mould removal had cleared more of the mould.

In Summary this product does eactly what it says on the box. It will remove mould and mildew if you just let it work its magic.

A home air purifier is a boon, especially if you have little kids living in your domicile. This is also true in case you have elderly and sick relatives with you; and if you are sharing spaces with your favorite pet(s.) Most people think that investing in a <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.oxynetsolutions.com/”>home air purifier is a waste of time and money. After all, most homes now have HVAC (heating-ventilation-air conditioning) systems installed. But having an HVAC is different from having a purifier. The ventilation and the air conditioning units can do no more than circulate the air, which means air that is infested with microscopic debris is only being regurgitated by the system. This is only filtered by human lungs when people breathe the contaminated air in. Needless to say, this is not a particularly healthy way of living. If you are not impressed with the functions of a home air purifier, here are the 5 most active signs that you need one as soon as possible.

5. The air outside seems so much better than inside. Do you notice that you and some members of your household always throw open the windows so that “fresh air” can come in? This is an obvious sign that the quality of your indoor air is poor. Unfortunately, according to the EPA or Environment Protection Agency, outdoor air is 2 times more toxic than indoor air. That means: the “fresh air” you are actually getting is more contaminated than the one you already have. A purifier can improve your indoor air by as much as 99%.

4. You can see dust specks and larger airborne materials floating in the air during the day. Even if you are the most ardent house cleaner, and that you have near obsessive-compulsive tendencies when it comes to cleaning your house, there are moments when you can plainly see airborne materials floating merrily about. You can not eliminate these without an air purifier. And the more you let these airborne materials hang in the air, the more they will multiply in the end. This causes the stuffy and dry atmosphere within your home.

3. Cooking smells take the longest time to dissolve and these linger on clothes and furniture. There are days when you will notice that your clothes and your hair smell like the meal you just prepared. Or even worse, the bacon aroma during breakfast was still there when you got home way past the dinner hour. Smells should be immediately removed because these carry traces of oil and protein materials which other airborne organisms feed on. A good, working air purifier should be able to remove food smells in less than 5 minutes.

2. The development of mold and mildew is another active sign that you need to do something with your air problem. Mold and mildew appear when there is too much moisture in the air. These will settle on almost anything remotely edible like old bread, leather coats and even rubber shoes. Unfortunately, mold and mildew spores are released into the air and can be easily inhaled by anyone within the room.

1. Respiratory illnesses are common. Coughing, sniffles, chest pains, and sneezing are all indications that there are bacterial, fungal and viral contagions in the air, which are actively being circulated by your HVAC. Unfortunately, the heating system in the HVAC promotes their growth in numbers. So by the time the air circulates, you and the rest of you household are probably inhaling a huge volume of contagions already.

Most people think of climate control storage as something that food service companies need to keep food refrigerated or frozen. For the average user, they think of self storage as a large building made of rooms that are about the size of a one-car garage or smaller, with a garage type door and no special features at all. And some self storage units are just that a medium-sized concrete room with a garage type door that allow large items to be put into the storage unit easily. The temperature inside the unit varies with the season; they’re boiling hot in the summer and frigid in the winter. These types of storage units are ideal for items that aren’t affected by changes in climate or for short term storage.

Some self storage facilities offer covered outdoor storage for certain items, and some offer indoor storage designed for specific purposes, so your choices don’t just range from mini storage to units that are large enough to house every piece of your furniture. You can get specialized self storage for your other storage needs, too.

Climate control storage is offered at many facilities and can be used for a variety of purposes. Some companies will have climate controlled self storage units just for storing wine, for instance. They’ll be able to tell you how many cases will fit into each unit, and should offer the temperature they keep the unit at 24 hours per day and 7 days per week-for wine, it should be right around 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

This type of special self storage will cost more than a standard storage unit of the same size that doesn’t have climate control. It will probably also cost a little more if it’s designated for a specific purpose – like wine self storage p than if it’s merely advertised as air conditioned and heated to maintain a certain temperature and therefore keep items from melting or freezing.

For the wine aficionado, wine self storage offers the benefits of keeping fine wines at the ideal temperature year round. Many people who enjoy wines don’t have the optimal storage space in their homes for the bottles. A wine cellar is ideal because of the built-in coolness of rooms that are underground, but if you don’t have a wine cellar, having one built can be expensive. Self storage is a good, cost effective solution for storing wine properly.

Storing wine isn’t the only good application of climate control storage. If you need to store wooden furniture, for instance, you could store it in a regular self storage unit that has a temperature that can vary widely according to the season. Or you could pay just a little more and store it in climate control storage, which will much better protect your furniture investment.

Wood furniture might not be affected much by the heat or cold of the air, but climate control storage doesn’t just control temperature. These units control the amount of dust in the air by their very nature. Because heating or cooling is used, air filters are also used, which can keep your storage unitcleaner and better protect the surfaces of your furniture or other items.

When you rent a regular storage unit, the changes in temperature can cause condensation and “sweating” on some surfaces. This moisture can cause damage like mold, mildew, water stains, discoloration and even warping, in some more extreme cases.

With climate control units, which are typically kept at a temperature between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, this condensation is prevented, protecting the items from moisture damage. Climate control units are also, by their nature, humidity controlled. So the dryer air also protects your items from the damage that can be caused by being in a moist environment.

Many items like artwork or antique items can be preserved longer and better in a climate control storage unit. Think of the museums and archaeological societies when they uncover a treasure-it’s immediately put into a climate controlled environment to minimize any further decay and damage. Your valuable items deserve no less attention.

Even items like clothing and paperwork can be damaged by humidity and moisture caused by rapidly changing temperatures and extreme temperatures. Your clothes and papers could come out of storage with a musty smell, or even show signs of mildew if not in climate control storage.

A final benefit to climate control storage is that, along with the units, the hallways in the building are likely climate controlled too, so that you’re more comfortable when accessing your items.

As molds are omnipresent, it’s indeed difficult to avoid exposure to molds. Molds, mildews, fungus and injurious microscopic organisms are everywhere. Like all other members of ecosystem, molds and mildews are vital for maintaining environmental balance. By decomposing organic matters into simple hydrocarbons they continue the carbon and energy circulation through out the food chain. Earth without molds, fungi and other such organisms would become hard to live.

Mold bodies do not contain chlorophyll. They depend on dead organic matters for food. While collecting nutrition they decompose complex organic matters into simple form of hydrocarbons. Thus they perform their own quota of responsibility for the ecosystem.

But, when these molds contaminate indoor environment they become troublesome. Being primitive organism, molds and mildews reproduce by releasing spores. High density of mold spores in air leads to health problems. Apart from this, some toxic black molds produce mycotoxins which are injurious for human health. Molds, mold spores and mycotoxins create severe health issues.

Allergic Reactions:

Molds, spores, hyphal and mycelial sections are allergens, i.e., human body shows allergic responses to these components. Like any other antigen, when mold spores, hyphal or, mycelial parts enter into our system; the body releases antibodies to protect the infection.

Not all people react to molds and mold spores. Also, the amount of mold fragment that causes allergy is not fixed for all. Some people are hypersensitive to foreign particles. Even some subjects are allergic to pollens too. Oversensitive people should always try to avoid exposure to molds. Symptoms of mold allergy are watery eyes, puffing around eyes, irritation of throat, runny noses, extreme coughing and sneezing, asthma and more.

Some molds may lead to skin rashes and dermal infections. Dry skin, feet, nails are prone to such molds.

Opportunistic Infections:

People with healthy immune system are not vulnerable to such infections. However, those with compromised immune system suffer a lot as they have lesser ability to fight against infections. Hence, immunocompromised people need better protection against http://www.moldinspectioncompanies.org/black-mold/ black mold and mildews.

Diseases like AIDS, cancer fall under this category. HIV does a lot of harm to immune system. Chemotherapy, immunosuppressive drugs also lead to impaired immune system. People undergoing similar treatment need special care and should avoid mold infection at any cost.

Toxic Effects:

Molds and mildews produce both volatile and non-volatile compounds which cause the environment toxic. The musty odor observed at the place of mold contamination is due to these compounds. Such compounds produced by foodborne molds cause the unpleasant taste and smell in contaminated foods.

Mycotoxins, non-volatile compound, are produced by molds during their metabolism. Mycotoxins spread through out the mold colony including the substrate on which it has grown. Spores released from toxic mold colonies, fragments of toxic black mold when aerosolized, chances of toxic infection become higher.

Among various reactions of mycotoxins, flu like symptoms, throat irritation, headache, diarrhea, fatigue, cough, dermatitis and skin rash, malfunctioning of immune system are few to name.

Preventive measures:

Black mold and mildews cannot grow without moisture. Keeping building environment dry prevents indoor mold growth. However, if they grow anyway, remove molds with http://www.mold-removal.biz/natural-cleaning-products natural cleaning products.

All people are not allergic to molds. Those who are hypersensitive should carefully avoid exposure to molds. Keeping home, office and other indoor environments clean and dry helps to prevent mold growth.

When it comes to maintaining home and commercial settings one thing is for sure, carpets get dirty. As one of the only surfaces in the home or commercial location to remain continually underfoot, carpets can become quickly soiled with dirt and grease. However, carpets also attract stains, as carpet fibers soak up anything spilled on carpets. This makes it near impossible to remove wine, blood, food, juice, drink, and other stains from carpeted surfaces with standard vacuum cleaners. The proper way to remove the stains is through the use of steam cleaners.

Other carpet cleaners literally soak carpets in order to remove all soil and stain materials. This can lead to mildew and mold growth, which may be detrimental to the health of family members in the home setting or employees and customers in commercial locations. In addition to the poor health resulting from mildew growth, wet carpets tend to smell. For commercial users, maintaining carpets is essential to maintaining businesses. Yet, carpets that smell will deter customers even more. Therefore, the use of vapor steam is essential. Vapor steam cleaners use “dry” vapor steam to effectively clean with less water than other machines. This leaves carpets and other surfaces drier.

This is why home, commercial, and even industrial users requiring the ability to maintain the appearance of carpets should use steam cleaners. While steam cleaners are not designed for use on carpets in an entire room, they are ideal for effectively and quickly removing spots and problem areas. Additionally, by efficiently removing stains as they occur, these carpet steam cleaners will effectively lengthen the life of your carpet.

Carpet steam cleaners provide other benefits as well. For family members, employees, or customers within the environment to be cleaned, steam cleaners can actually aid in the prevention or alleviation of allergies and asthma through the use of HEPA filters. Not all steam cleaners feature HEPA filters. However, those that do provide an extra layer of protection against allergens, which effectively improves the indoor air quality.

Not only can steam cleaners improve indoor air quality, but they can also improve the overall safety of virtually any environment. By using astoundingly high temperature vapor steam, up to 360ºF in some machines, steam cleaners effectively sanitize and disinfect while cleaning. In fact, some vapor steam cleaners feature anti-bacterial technology to kill 99.9% of bacteria while cleaning.

The most effective carpet steam cleaners feature vacuum extraction. This allows operators to use high-temperature steam to dissolve the most stubborn stains while simultaneously extracting the stains from the carpet fibers. Best of all, this powerful cleaning action can be accomplished without the need for using harmful chemicals; the residues of which can be left in your carpet harming those who come in contact with it.

Between the powerful cleaning capabilities, high temperatures, improved air quality, and overall increased health and safety of the environment steam cleaners are the ideal machines for maintaining the appearance of carpets through spot cleaning.

There are many mold and mildew removers available out there in the market today. Some of these are household chemical products such as cleansers and disinfectants that are used for scrubbing away at mold and mildew. Some are industrial-strength chemical products that are applied to really nasty cases of mold and mildew.

An ozone generator is one such mold and mildew remover. It is considered to be among the most effective of such agents used for remediating mold. As the name suggests, ozone generators transform oxygen into ozone through the use of electrical currents. Ozone generators blast high concentrations of ozone on mold and mildew, and thereby killing them.

How does ozone created by ozone generators kill mold and mildew? Simply put, ozone is an oxidizing agent. Whenever a molecule of ozone comes in contact with mold, the molecule oxidizes the mold and disables its ability to reproduce itself. This process eventually kills the mold. However, quantity is a crucial factor when it comes to remediating mold, and so, the number of ozone molecules that come in contact with the mold should outnumber the mold itself. This produces what is called a “shock” effect on the mold. The shock of exposure with highly concentrated ozone is fatal to mold and mildew.

There are, however, some limitations on how ozone generators are to be used as well as how effective they can be. Before using an ozone generator, it is important that the water and the ventilation problem in the affected area should be addressed first. Ozone generators work best in dry areas. Also, how high the concentration of ozone needed to get rid of mildew and mold depends on the size of the area and the level of contamination. The larger the area to be decontaminated and the higher the degree of contamination, the higher the concentration of the ozone should be. Ozone will not effectively kill mold and mildew if the concentration is too low compared to the degree of contamination.

Most importantly, the treatment of mold contamination should be complete and thorough. Thus, dead mold and mildew should be removed physically with the use of a vacuum fitted with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. Mold can feed on dead mold. If a nutrient source for mold is available, the mold and mildew contamination can return.

Another critical aspect that must be remembered about ozone generators is that as effective as they are as mold and mildew removers, they should not be used on occupied areas. Areas to be treated with ozone generators should be evacuated first. Ozone is toxic to mold and mildew and it is also toxic to humans, animals and plants.

Ozone generators are quite effective as mold and mildew removers. To make the most of the capability of ozone generators to kill mold and mildew, they should be used in the most optimum manner.

Natural fibers used with carpet are produced either
by insects, animals, or even plants. The fibers
that are produced by insects or animals are known as
protein fibers. Those that are made by plants are
known as vegetable fibers. Vegetable and protein
fibers share the common disadvantage that they are
both very absorbent and will have extended drying
times when wet cleaned – which can lead to mildew,
shrinkage, and even dry rot.

Wool
Wool fiber is produced from the fleece of lambs or
sheep. Wool of carpet is imported from countries
such as England, Australia, and New Zealand. Wool
is the oldest and considered to be the finest of
all carpet material.

The ability of wool to stretch up to 40% of its
original length and the fact that it can be bent
back and forth more than 180,000 times without
breaking makes it very resilient. Wool is the most
expensive material for carpet, although it is also
the best you can buy.

Silk
The fiber of silk is produced by the larva of
various insects known as silk worms. The silk, in
continuous lengths from 300 to 1600 yards is spun
to produce the cocoons. As a fiber, silk is naturally
non flammable, strong, and not affected by static
charge problems – even at low humidity.

Cellulose fiber
This type of fiber is produced by plants and normally
not used as face yarns. These types will however,
show up as backing materials of tufted as as well
as carpets that have been woven.

Cotton
Cotton is a vegetable seed fiber that is produced
from the cotton plant. The primary use for this
fiber is yarns woven in carpet or rugs. Cotton is
resistant to alkaline solutions and becomes stronger
when it is wet.

The biggest disadvantages to cotton is the fact
that is the most absorbent of all fibers and requires
extended drying times after being wet cleaned. It
is also easily damaged by acids, stains easily,
mats down, soils quickly, and is subject to mildew,
dry rot, and shrinkage.

Jute
The fiber of jute is produced by the jute plant
which grows in South America, Pakistan, and even in
India. The stalk of the jute plant is where the
longer coarse fibers are obtained, located between
the outer bark and within the inner pulp.

Jute is normally used as weft yarns, across the
width, in woven carpets and as a backing material
in the construction of tufted carpets. Jute is an
inexpensive material that also serves other uses
than just carpet. Like all other fibers, this one
has disadvantages as well. The fiber is weak when
it becomes wet and is also subject to dry rot,
shrinkage, and mildew.

Sisal
The fiber of sisal is produced by the leaves of the
agave plant. Sisal is very strong and primarily
used for making rugs, sacking, rope, and even
carpet. The fiber stains easily and is also very
difficult to clean. Wet cleaning can also cause
shrinkage so its best to use low moisture methods.

Rayon
There is quite a bit of confusion about rayon and
it is easy to understand why. Rayon is a
synthetic fiber that is produced from natural
cellulosic fibers of wood pulp or cotton. The
material is put through several chemical treatments
which help to turn it into a synthetic fiber.

Primarily, rayon is used for area rugs because of
its silk like appearance. It can be damaged by
acids, has low resistance to abrasion and is also
prone to cellulose browning.
